Healthy From Head, to Heart, to Toes During Pregnancy

Date: 12/19/22

Pregnancy is different for everyone. Knowing your own health is very important, especially your heart health.

If you already know that you have a heart problem, it’s important to talk to your doctor about that health history. Even if your heart disease doesn't cause symptoms or hasn't affected your life, it can still cause issues during pregnancy. This is because of changes in your body that happen when you're pregnant. Some women don't know they have heart disease until the stresses of pregnancy reveal the problem.

The symptoms of heart disease may look like symptoms of other health problems. Not to worry, as you go to your regular prenatal and postnatal appointments, your healthcare provider will ask about your symptoms. They can also give you an exam to check any symptoms you might be concerned with. Always be honest your healthcare provider about your symptoms and how you feel.

If you do have a heart condition, you may need to see your healthcare provider more often. This is so they can watch you and your baby. You may also need medicine to help your heart work better.  Your healthcare team will decide the safest way for you to have your baby.
